Investments in energy, infrastructural and extractive industries could be a catalyst for sustainable economic development in developing nations. In Africa, some responsible companies, in addition to fulfilling legally required payments, often seek to contribute immensely to local economies. Yet, in many cases, such investments have not been associated with successful national or local community development as the countries have weak strategies and legislation on the management of investment revenues and benefits. Projects are usually situated within the ambit of specific policies and programmes. The impact of these projects can be economic, social, environmental and biodiversity related. To realize the expected impact, state legislation and policy packages are overarching imperative towards effective coordination and delivery of socially responsible projects. Such will have to be pursued and realized in the framework of national, local and corporate planning and policy towards economic, social and environmental development of host countries or communities.
